Native Brews of Duluth

We could do a long boring explanation, but basically our brewers are Star Wars nerds and are often talking of Jedi Knights and the Millennium Falcon.  It is our tribute to a galaxy far, far away.  This E.S.B. starts with a moderate hop aroma and mingles with malt and some soft fruity esters.  It’s a medium bodied beer with a solid caramel presence, evidenced by it’s copper hue and a moderate hop bitterness.  And we did it in under twelve parsecs.

This springtime offering cures all cabin fever symptoms after just three sips.  It’s a complex brew with a lot going on. Initially the tart aromas abound on the front end with more floral and herbaceous undertones coming into play as your glass warms.  The flavor profile is driven by a large portion of wheat malt which lends a bready earthiness to the malt side of things while three hop variates give an ever present bitterness throughout.  Party on, it’s spring.

A German interpretation of our popular “Wetsuit Malfunction,”  this refreshing wheat beer is brewed with an old German yeast strain that imparts notes of Clove, Banana, and Vanilla as well as a lightly tart and citrusy flavor. It has a medium light body and a soft well rounded wheat profile. It’s topped with a “mousse like”  head and served at a higher carbonation level which helps accentuate the lighter clean finish.

A lightly hazy “farmouse” style ale inspired by the color of the many farm fields along Lake Superior’s South Shore. This is a fairly big saison meant to help you with your spring thaw.  The belgian yeast gives it a lot of character and imparts notes of citrus (mostly orange) and pepper.  It has a characteristically medium light body with a somewhat soft velvety dry finish.  It shows a light malt character and a slight tartness that keeps it quenching and refreshing.

What’s delicate as the lakeshore mist but snappy as your German grandmother’s goulash? This Kolsch. Like your Oma, this brilliant beer has quite a story. It starts with the tangy aroma of apples and pears but finishes so crisp, you will want to roll up your sleeves and dig into the harvest. It’s balanced and subtle, soft and unique. If you asked real nice—and if it wasn’t a beer—it might just bake you a pie.

With a big grapefruit bouquet as intense but not quite as fickle as Lake Superior herself, this smooth and spicy brew will take you on a ride. Stoned Surf is a medium-bodied IPA with a frisky hop aroma to balance its complex malt backbone. Speaking of backbone, this ‘Merican Pale Ale is intended for those with just that. Think big, think bold, think about hopping in the lake and taming a fresh water wave, my friend.

Don’t drop in on someone’s wave.  Don’t cut down trees that don’t need to be cut down.  Don’t hog all the good fishin’ holes.  Don’t own 50 pairs of ski’s and only use one pair.  Don’t grow a mustache just because your buddy can’t.  Don’t be a greedy bastard.  Dark in color and character, this Black IPA is distinctly bitter with floral and citrusy tones, and finishes with an extremely subtle roasted note.

Brewed as an homage to those who rise up and set out into the darkness.  Whether it’s to watch the lake steam from the bow of your boat on an early morning paddle or to heed the call of the woods in the gray limbo before dawn: Wake up, people! This complex beer, with its spicy and fruity flavors, will provoke. The medium bodied yet light Belgian brew is the perfect reward as you look back on the journey that made up your day. Is a nut hatchet a hatchet for nuts? Maybe it’s an old Northcoast legend of some nut running around with a hatchet. Either way, this Nut Hatchet cuts in broad strokes with its hints of toffee and toasted nuts. You’ll notice the balance of sweet maltiness and soft fruit, but its gentle caramel notes will really stand out. You know what else really stands out? That Nut Hatch that we just saw sitting on a hatchet outside the window.
